Phase 1 and NVC

Phase 1 and NVC across Surrey, Dorset, Somerset and Wiltshire

PEA/Phase 1 & Extended Phase 1 Habitat Surveys

Darwin Ecology Phase 1 Services:

  •     Site visit to identify and map of all habitat types
  •     Creation of a coded habitat map with the addition of detailed target notes of important ecological features
  •     A report to include species lists of all plants evident at the time of survey
  •     assessment of all habitats for their potential to support legally protected species or those included on Local or National Biodiversity Action Plans (BAPs)
  •     Desk study of existing biological records for the local area obtained from the local biological records centre
  •     Recommendations and solutions for development and local wildlife protection

Extended Phase 1 Surveys

Site owners and Local Planning Authorities have a legal obligation to ensure the development aims to maintain and enhance biodiversity interest on or around the development site and we will provide recommendations and solutions as to how you can develop your land and protect local wildlife.

Extended Phase 1 Surveys can be carried out throughout the year, although we recommend undertaking these surveys between April and September as vegetation tends to be easier to identify during these months and will produce more accurate analysis. Use our survey calendar above to help plan your works schedule.

Preliminary Ecological Appraisal

If you do not require a full Phase 1 Habitat Survey we can undertake quick “walkover surveys” that will give you an overview of the likely potential of protected species.

This type of survey is often carried out pre-purchase to check whether your plans for the site are likely to incur significant protected species mitigation costs.

This type of survey is also acceptable to some Local Planning Authorities in place of a full Phase 1 Habitat Survey where there is little or no ecological interest on the site.

Use our survey calendar above to help plan your works schedule.

National Vegetation Classification (NVC)

Darwin Ecology NVC Services:

  •     Site visit to identify and map of all vegetation types following JNCC methodology
  •     Creation of a map with the addition of detailed target notes of important ecological features
  •     A report to include species lists of all vegetation evident at the time of survey
  •     Assessment of all vegetation included on Local or National Biodiversity Action Plans (BAPs)
  •     Recommendations and solutions for development and local wildlife protection

NVC Surveys

Site owners and Local Planning Authorities have a legal obligation to ensure the development aims to maintain and enhance biodiversity interest on or around he development site. We will provide recommendations and solutions as to how you can develop your land and protect local wildlife.

NVC surveys can be carried out throughout the year, although we recommend undertaking these surveys between April and September as vegetation tends to be easier to identify during these months and will produce more accurate analysis. Use our survey calendar above to help plan your works schedule.
